THE JOURNEY OF COUNTY ROAD 5
The original members of CountyRoad5 were Dustin Sharp, David Zugelder, Dave Andrews and Aaron Baty. Dave Andrews and David Zugelder, being cousins, had been jamming together since childhood. Dave Andrews received his first set of drums at sixteen years old, and shortly after David received his first guitar. The two immediately began basement jams and a series of musical projects that honed their musical abilities.
When David moved from Kansas City, Ks to Basehor, Ks he met up with Dustin Sharp, a loud and boisterous freshman at Basehor-Linwood High School. When Dustin had revealed his love for belting out tunes to make the girls swoon, David introduced Dustin to the guitar. Dustin soon became just as infatuated as David was with music. The pair, now graduated and inseparable, began playing as a duo at parties and pizza joints around town. Thus began a new chapter in the history of County Road 5.
Dave, David, and Aaron (Aaron being a friend Dave had met over the internet) had formed a rock project called Sense of Self - they played shows at local charities and bars for a few months. Soon the trio became weary of a dwindling rock scene in the KC area and decided to call it quits. A short break made them realize the absence of performing was not acceptable to the appetite for music they had.
Back in the fall of 2002 David put out a call to his two former band mates and his best singing buddy to start a band for fun, a novel idea that would later become the focal point of those involved. Originally it was intended to be a weekend warrior type show along with parties for people they knew. After a few rehearsals the newly formed group set out to start performances. The very first gig was a local marine themed bar and grill known as Harbor Hop. Dustin had assisted former classmate T.C. Bryant in completing
construction on the building, and this gave the group an inside on the local hot spot. A few weeks after the opening of the Harbor Hop, the nameless group had chosen the title that many across the metro and beyond have come to know: County Road 5 set up and put on a show that pleasantly surprised the audience that gathered.
Soon the members of County Road 5 realized the potential of this band they had formed and began to look beyond local outlets. Dave Andrews at this point in his life had come to a crossroads: either he was to stick with the group or follow his dream of becoming a full time paramedic and firefighter. With no regret and no hard feelings Dave retired his position as the percussionist for C.R.5 to pursue his career. In light of this need C.R.5 seamlessly made the transition from Dave Andrews to Tom Winborn. Tom effortlessly stepped into the position and wowed audiences with his aggressive “in your face” style. The group with this extraordinary new member moved forward.
Following closely behind Dave Andrews, Aaron had met the woman to whom he is now married. The newlyweds decided they wanted to become parents and Aaron left C.R.5 to follow through with his new commitments. C.R.5 was sad to see Aaron go and they remained close friends. The band went on for a few months partnering up with local musicians they had become acquainted with to fill in Aarons place on the bass guitar.
David, with a huge amount of luck, crossed paths with Wade Buchanan. Wade can only be placed in a class of his own. His nimble fingers fused with his vast knowledge of music made him the ingredient that completed the unmistakable chemistry crowds are floored by today. With a new energy and a sound that was virtually unheard of the group was now beginning to gain curiosity regionally and nationally. The missing link was something that would set them apart from other acts: Chuck Martin was the perfect solution. Chuck has an exceptional ability to breathe life into any piece of music that he is introduced to. His talent and love for music reflects in every note he strikes either on his guitar or harmonica. With this perfect blend of persona and charisma the only logical step….an album.
David and Dustin over a period of time began to reminisce and write about their life experiences. They called upon the other two members for every ounce of input they could render. The result was a collection of self portraits that portray the ups and downs in each member’s life through the perfect balance of lyric and song; the melodies and real life reflections stake a claim in the mind of every listener that lends eyes and ears to it.
Upon final production of the album County Road 5 is now forging their sound, personality, and influence on the ever changing face of country and rock music. The group is noted for fusing the two genres together flawlessly and is often praised by many for this accomplishment.
